While the benefits of gardening are many—and few things on Earth are as satisfying as pulling a ripe tomato or gorgeous rose that you grew—the majority of time spent in your yard is upkeep and maintenance, and the amount of pruning you'll do over your lifetime is, well, a lot. Particularly in spring and fall, pruning is a critical task. But no matter how sharp your tools are, the repetitive motion is rough on your hands. All gardeners have hand cramps that get worse as you age. It's no wonder that electric pruners have become all the rage the last few years: I bought—and highly recommend—these Worx electric pruners, which are on sale for $89 (regularly $130) for Prime Day.
The concept of electric pruners is simple: You just hold the blades where you want to cut, and press the button. The blades close, and you didn't have to exert any energy. This model has a particularly ergonomic design, so it feels comfortable to hold in your hand. Worx calls this a pruner/lopper, which was part of the allure (loppers are usually longer and for more substantial limbs than a pruner). This model handles larger limbs easily. So long as it'll fit in the blades (up to 1-inch), the Worx pruner can cut through it—I've sliced through hard and softwood.
I worried that using an electric pruner would slow me down, but it turns out to be as fast and efficient as using manual pruners. It takes a minute to adjust to letting the machine take over, but the relief you feel in your hands is well worth it. I can even switch hands and use it from my less dominant, because it's just pushing a button.
The Worx weighs about two pounds, so its heavier than a manual pruner, but it doesn't feel heavier. The counterbalance is well-designed, so it feels light and easy to maneuver.
You still need to sanitize it between plants, just like a manual pruner, but I keep a spray bottle of vinegar around for just that. At the end of the day, pull the battery and throw it in the charger (the Worx comes with both, and you can buy additional batteries). For less than 100 bucks, I've gone from dreading pruning to enjoying it.
